Careful! The verb to save can be translated as salvar — to save the planet — or as ahorrar when talking about money, time, or energy.

La forma más eficaz, directa y persuasiva de ofrecer recomendaciones y sugerencias es utilizar el verbo en modo imperativo. Sin embargo, existen otras estructuras más suaves e indirectas. Durante los exámenes, tanto en la producción oral como en la escrita, es recomendable emplear una variedad de estructuras. The most effective, direct, and persuasive way to give recommendations and suggestions is to use the verb in the imperative mood. However, there are other structures that are softer and more indirect. During exams—both oral and written—it is advisable to use a variety of structures. Study the examples in this chart to review the ones you already know and learn some new ones. Then, download the worksheet and put them into practice.

Here is a range of structures, from basic to advanced, that you can use to give recommendations or suggestions.

1. Infinitive structures with the present tense  
  • Tienes que apagar la luz.
  • Debes apagar la luz.
  • Hay que apagar la luz.
  • Puedes apagar la luz.
  • You have to turn off the light.
  • You must turn off the light.
  • One must turn off the light.
  • You can turn off the light.

2. Infinitive structures with the conditional tense

  
  • Tendrías que apagar la luz.
  • Deberías apagar la luz.
  • Habría que apagar la luz.
  • Podrías apagar la luz.

  • You should turn off the light.

  • You could turn off the light.

3. Subordinate clauses with the subjunctive mood

  
  • Te recomiendo que apagues la luz.
  • Te sugiero que apagues la luz.
  • Te aconsejo que apagues la luz.
  • Te pido que apagues la luz.
  • Te ruego que apagues la luz.
  • I recommend that you turn off the light.
  • I suggest that you turn off the light.
  • I advise you to turn off the light.
  • I ask you to turn off the light.
  • I beg you to turn off the light.

4. Imperative mood

  
  • Apaga la luz, por favor.

  1. En parejas, intercambiad vuestras respuestas a la pregunta de la actividad 6: ¿Y tú, qué haces para cuidar del planeta?
  2. A partir de lo escrito, intercambiad recomendaciones y sugerencias utilizando estructuras variadas y respondiendo a la pregunta: ¿Qué más podríamos hacer?
  3. Por último, redactad un discurso para animar a vuestros compañeros de clase a hacer más por cuidar del planeta.
  1. In pairs, exchange your answers to the question in Activity 6: And you, what do you do to take care of the planet?
  2. Based on what you wrote, exchange recommendations and suggestions using a variety of structures and answering the question: What else could we do?
  3. Finally, write a speech to encourage your classmates to do more to take care of the planet.

De Profe a Profe:

Al terminar la lección, los alumnos comprueban cuántas palabras de la lista inicial que elaboraron durante la lluvia de ideas ya pueden traducir al español. Si todavía hay palabras que no conocen, pueden escribirlas en la pizarra. Este puede ser un buen punto de partida para enlazar con el tema del medio ambiente y trabajar el vocabulario pendiente.
