As you read the guide, you realise there's a lot to juggle, such as global issues, concepts and areas of exploration. How does one design a syllabus that's meaningful for students? Start with the end in mind. Let's plan backwards from the Paper 1 exam. The best way learn is by doing. This 90-minute, hands-on session walks you through the Paper 1 and explores the core skills of the Language A: Language and Literature course.

  • Session 2: Paper 2

Again, we start from the end. What does the Paper 2 exam look like and how can we best prepare students for success? This 90-minute session explores the nuts-and-bolts of Paper 2, the reading requirements and possible course outlines.

  • Session 3: Individual Oral

The individual oral (IO) is internally assessed, meaning you (the teacher) are administering this. No pressure, you got this! In this 90-minute session, you'll hear a model performance, discuss non-lit Bodies of Work (BOWs), explore IO outlines, and write a 'global issue'. We'll see where the IO fits into a coherent course outline and discuss how they can best be administered.

  • Session 4: HLE and course outlines

At Higher Level, students write a 1,200- to 1,500-word essay (HLE). How do we guide students, as they decide on a work and a line of inquiry? Can they write more than one essay? What is the teacher's role? This session answers these questions and concludes with a discussion on course planning and outlines.
