Her (HLE)
The following unit of inquiry introduces you to the film 'Her' by Spike Jonze. It's about a near-future, dystopian world where a man falls in love with his operating system. Although the film is from 2013, it could not be anymore relevant today with the rise of AI. You will analyse stills from this non-literary body of work (BOW) and prepare a Higher Level Essay on this work or another work of choice. This unit should take about 19 lessons of 50 minutes to complete.

ATLs or Learner Profile
Teachers can give feedback on one complete draft of the HL Essay, according to the guide. But what about giving feedback on an outline? Sure! Why not? It's important to use professional judgement. Notice how these worksheets encourage students to use AI in some ways but not others. Students, when reflecting on the process, should be honest about their use of AI.
Assessment
Notice how this process of introducing the HL Essay asks students to write their first complete draft in class, using pen and paper, in order to avoid academic honesty issues with AI. The IB is very vague on their recommended use of AI. If you, as a teacher, are looking for an authentic example of what your students can write, then their are three great tools: a pen, a paper and a clock. There is also compromise between course work (which is developed with AI whether we acknowledge it or not) and exam conditions, as this unit recommends: Students can bring a 600-word outline developed at home and in class, with or without the help of AI, during an exam-style writing session for the first draft of their HL Essay.
