The introduction
How do you write the opening paragraph of your essay? There is no second chance at a first impression, and so the introduction of your essay serves an important role in establishing the strength of your Extended Essay.
Together with your supervisor or candidate, read the three introductions provided below. What elements do they have in common? How do they follow a similar patter?

Thesis statements
The Extended Essay is a 'reasoned argument' (Criterion C). In the English-speaking world, there is a essay-writing tradition of stating your main claim at the end of the introduction. This is called a 'thesis statement'. Notice how the thesis statements from the 3 introductions below, do the following three things:
- answer the research question,
- outline the scope of the essay,
- make a claim or argument.

Assessment
Write your introduction before writing your essay. Then write your essay. Then re-write your introduction. Some students prefer to write their introduction last, which is also acceptable. But by writing a rough draft of it early, you will have a sense of focus during the essay writing process.
