Barefoot Gen (P2)

The following unit of inquiry introduces you to the graphic novel, Barefoot Gen, by Keiji Nakazawa. This unit comes after the Persepolis (P2) unit. As you read the Barefoot Gen, you are asked to make comparisons to Persepolis, especially in relation to authorial choices. The last few worksheets in this unit ask you to make a visual comparison, create a Paper 2 outline and write a practice Paper 2.  This worksheet should take about 18 lessons of 50 minutes to complete.

Unit: Barefoot Gen
ATLs

One of the IB's ATLs is thinking skills. Before you can demonstrate your thinking skills on Paper 2, it helps to unpack an essay question and make an outlined response. In fact, you do not always have to write a full Paper 2 responses to practice analytical thinking. Worksheets 4 and 5, in particular, include exercises that help you make connections and think critically.

Assessment

Paper 2 is a timed exam. Writing under exam conditions (with pen, paper and clock) is good practice. Notice that worksheet 6 asks you to improve your written work with the help of ChatGPT (artificial intelligence). Comparing your initial, handwritten work to computer-assisted rewritten work can help you learn to write coherently and concisely.
