The following unit of inquiry introduces you to the Pulitzer Prize winning opinion writer, Thomas L. Friedman after an exploration of news, fake news and even Brexit. This unit has a little bit of everything, with some activities that help you write better paragraphs for a Paper 1 exam. The unit includes a creative activity which asks you to write a piece of satirical news. This worksheet should take about 14 lessons of 50 minutes to complete. It's appropriate for Grade 10 (pre-IB), as it introduces Paper 1 and relies on several scaffolded writing exercises. This unit goes particularly well with the Amanda Goreman unit.

ATLs

Several worksheets ask you to collaborate. In fact, before you can write the final assignment, you are asked to read everyone's notes on which the final text is taken. As a class, it's important to try to build a community of learners where students co-dependent on one another and good analysis is readily shared with everyone.

Assessment

This worksheet prepares you for Paper 1. However, one of the main assignments is a creative writing task, in which you are asked to write satirical news. Not every unit needs to explore a piece of IB assessment. In fact, there is great value in creative writing. It is one of the best ways to show your understanding of a text type and the course content.
