Dear Nitisha,
Thank you for your important questions about the updated version of the Language Acquisition Guide. As you mention, strand iii has been altered and as the news items from August 9th on My IB states ‘(f)or the criteria A (listening), and criteria B (reading), the analysis should be made between a wide range of texts. The aim “Does the text link to the student’s personal world?” has been removed.’
Hence, in regards to your first question, comparisons between different elements of the multimodal text(s) would be appropriate. The Language Acquisition Guide states that in order to reach the aims of language acquisition for A Listening, it is important to ‘demonstrate understanding of relationships between the various components of the multimodal texts. What are the relationships between the various components of the multimodal texts? Do they share the same context?’ (Language Acquisition Guide p.9) and for B Reading ‘demonstrate understanding of relationships between the various components of the multimodal texts. Do they share the same context?’ (Language Acquisition Guide p.10)
More specifically, questions such as the following may therefore provide helpful examples of the types of questions possible:
- Compare and contrast the use of [images / sentences/ words/ music] in relation to the text.
For the purposes of eAssessment where there will be a comparison between a multimodal visual text and a multimodal audio text questions such as the following may be asked:
- Identify two aspects of XXX that are present in the video but not in the written text.
- Explain how each text refers to a specific concept.
- Identify two sentences, one from each text, which refer to the concept of XXX.
With regards to your second question, if it is possible to continue asking students to relate texts to their personal experience, it is always good practice to backwards plan from Diploma Programme or Career-related programme requirements. If you have found that your students benefit from these types of questions, it is advisable to continue with these during formative assessments. However, it is important to consider that if these questions feature in a summative assessment, they will now no longer address strand iii.
We hope you find this information useful.
Again, I am looking forward to meeting you, and appreciate your interest in the newly updated MYP Guides.
With kind regards,
Angela
Bonjour!
Bonne continuation!
